How Much to Water a Closed Terrarium (and How Often)
Watering is the part of terrarium care that trips up more beginners than any other, mostly because a closed terrarium behaves so differently from a normal houseplant. Overwatering a sealed jar is a far more common mistake than underwatering it, precisely because the instinct from regular houseplant care — when in doubt, water it — works against you here.
Why a closed terrarium needs so little
Once a sealed terrarium is established, it runs its own small water cycle: moisture evaporates from the substrate and plant surfaces, rises, condenses on the cooler glass, and drips back down onto the substrate. Almost nothing actually leaves the container, so the total amount of water inside stays roughly constant for a long time. That's why a well-balanced closed terrarium can often go several weeks, sometimes over a month, without needing a single top-up.
Reading the condensation
The glass itself is the best day-to-day indicator of whether the balance is right. A light, temporary mist that clears within a few hours of a light cycle is a healthy sign — the water cycle is running normally. Heavy condensation that never clears, coating the entire inside of the glass constantly, means there's more moisture in the system than it can comfortably handle, and it's time to crack the lid open for a few hours (or longer) to let some of that excess humidity escape.
At the other extreme, if the glass stays completely clear day after day and the substrate surface looks visibly dry, the terrarium doesn't have enough moisture in the system to sustain its own cycle, and it's due for a top-up.
How to actually add water
When a closed terrarium does need water, less is more. Adding a small amount — enough to dampen the surface without pooling — and then watching how the condensation pattern responds over the next day or two is a safer approach than soaking it heavily and hoping for the best. Because there's no drainage hole to flush excess water away, every bit you add stays in the system until it either gets absorbed, evaporates back into the room during a lid-off airing, or (in a badly balanced setup) contributes to a waterlogged substrate and root rot.
A squeeze bottle or a small watering can with a narrow spout gives far more control than pouring from an open container, especially in a narrow-necked jar where you can't easily see how much has landed where.
Signs of an imbalanced terrarium
Persistent heavy fogging combined with a sour or musty smell when you open the lid usually points to stagnant, trapped moisture and calls for a longer airing-out period, sometimes with the lid left off for a day or more. Mould appearing on the substrate surface or on decaying plant matter is a similar signal — it thrives in still, overly damp conditions, and more airflow (plus removing the affected material) generally clears it up faster than any other single change.
On the drier end, curling or browning leaf tips on moisture-loving plants like ferns and moss, combined with a substrate that looks pale and dry at the surface, mean the system doesn't hold enough water and needs both a top-up and, potentially, a tighter-sealing lid if it's losing moisture faster than expected.
Settling into a rhythm
Every terrarium finds its own equilibrium based on its specific plants, substrate, room temperature, and how well the lid seals, so there's no single watering schedule that fits every jar.
