Air Plants 101: Caring for Tillandsia Without Soil
Air plants — members of the genus Tillandsia — are some of the most striking plants you can put in or around a glass display, precisely because they don't need soil at all. That single fact changes almost everything about how you care for them compared with a rooted terrarium plant, and it's worth understanding before you bring one home, since most of the watering mistakes people make with air plants come from treating them like a regular potted houseplant instead.
How an air plant actually feeds itself
In the wild, most Tillandsia species are epiphytes, growing attached to tree branches, rock faces, or even power lines — anywhere they can get enough light and airflow, with no soil in sight. Their leaves are covered in tiny specialised scales called trichomes that absorb water and nutrients directly from the air, rain, and mist around them. The roots an air plant does grow are mainly there to anchor it to a surface, not to draw up water the way a typical houseplant's roots do.
This is exactly why air plants suit an open terrarium, a glass globe, or simply resting on driftwood or in a shallow dish far better than being buried in substrate the way a fern or moss would be. Soil around the base traps moisture against the plant with nowhere for it to dry out, which is one of the more common ways an air plant declines.
Watering: misting and soaking
Most growers combine two watering methods. Light misting a few times a week keeps humidity up around the leaves between deeper waterings, which particularly helps the plant if the air where it lives is on the dry side. A deeper soak — submerging the whole plant in room-temperature water for a stretch of time roughly once every week or two — gives it a more thorough drink, closer to what a rain shower would provide outdoors.
After either misting or soaking, letting the plant dry out fully, upside down or at an angle so water doesn't pool in its base, matters more than almost anything else. Sitting in trapped water for extended periods is the single most common cause of a struggling air plant, far more often than under-watering. A healthy air plant's leaves feel firm and slightly springy; leaves that go soft, translucent, or dark at the base are usually a sign the center has stayed wet too long rather than a sign it needs more water. Room-temperature water is worth sticking to for both misting and soaking — water straight from a cold tap can shock the plant slightly, and heavily softened or chemically treated water sometimes leaves a residue on the trichomes that interferes with how well they absorb moisture.
Light and placement
Bright, indirect light suits most Tillandsia species well — a spot near a window but out of hours of direct sun. Behind glass, direct sunlight is magnified and can heat leaves quickly, so a terrarium or globe display is often best kept a little further back from a sunny window than an open shelf display would need to be.
Airflow matters almost as much as light. Because air plants absorb so much through their leaf surface, a spot with some gentle air movement helps them dry properly after watering and generally seems to keep them healthier than a completely still, stagnant corner — another reason a fully open display or a loosely vented globe usually suits Tillandsia better than a tightly sealed jar.
Mounting and display without soil
Because an air plant doesn't need substrate to root into, how you display it comes down almost entirely to how it's anchored and how you plan to water it. Simply resting one in the fork of a piece of driftwood, on a bed of decorative sand, or nestled into a shallow dish is the lowest-effort option and makes soaking easy — just lift it out. Mounting onto bark, wood, or a piece of coral with a small dab of a plant-safe adhesive, floral wire wrapped loosely around the base, or fishing line gives a more permanent, natural-looking display, but it means a mounted plant either needs misting in place or a gentle unwrapping for a full soak, so many growers reserve mounting for species that lean more on misting than deep soaking to begin with. Wire and adhesive should sit against the base of the plant, never wrapped around or through the center where new growth emerges.
A few species worth knowing
Tillandsia ionantha is a compact, popular starting species that blushes red at its center as it nears bloom. Tillandsia xerographica is larger and more sculptural, with wide, curling silvery leaves, and tends to be more tolerant of drier conditions than many other species, since it hails from naturally arid regions. Spanish moss — itself a Tillandsia species despite the name — grows in long, trailing strands and is often draped rather than potted or displayed upright.
Blooming and pups
Most Tillandsia species flower only once in their life, often putting out a burst of colour from the center of the plant before or after the bloom fades. Around the same time, many air plants produce small offsets, commonly called pups, at their base. Left in place, these pups will grow and eventually crowd the parent plant into a cluster, which is a perfectly good outcome if that's the look you want — clustered "pupped-out" mounts are a common, low-effort display style. Separated once they've reached roughly a third of the parent's size, each pup can instead be grown on as its own independent plant, using the same gentle, careful separation at the base you'd use when un-mounting a plant, so as not to damage the small root anchors either plant has already put down. Neither the bloom nor the pups need any special care beyond the plant's normal watering routine.
How much humidity an air plant actually wants
Air plants ask for noticeably less ambient humidity than the moss-and-fern side of the terrarium world, which is one more reason they're usually the open-vessel choice rather than the closed one. Toxicity: good news for homes with pets
Tillandsia species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, which is genuinely reassuring given how often air plants end up displayed at exactly the height — a low shelf, a coffee table, a hanging mount within jumping reach — that a curious pet can get to. That doesn't mean encouraging a pet to chew on one is a good idea regardless (a mouthful of stiff, fibrous leaves can still cause mechanical irritation even from a plant that isn't chemically toxic), but it does mean an air plant display is a lower-risk choice than many of the trailing vines and succulents sometimes displayed alongside them. Common problems and how to read them
A plant that's curling its leaves tightly and looking generally shriveled is almost always under-watered relative to its environment — step up the misting frequency, or the room's ambient humidity is simply too low for that species, and a soak is overdue. Brown, crispy leaf tips with an otherwise healthy-looking plant usually mean the air is too dry between waterings rather than the plant needing more water at any single session; more frequent light misting addresses this better than longer soaks do. A plant that's gone soft, mushy, or dark at its base has almost certainly been sitting wet for too long, whether from standing water after a soak or from being displayed somewhere too humid and still to dry out properly between waterings — better drying position and airflow, not less water overall, is usually the fix.
